The West Seattle Gatewood Modern

This 1950s mid-century modern bungalow was thoughtfully reimagined to honor its original architectural spirit while transforming the way the home lives and flows. From the start, our clients shared a clear vision—an open, functional space that celebrated the home's modern lines and supported the rhythm of their everyday lives.

The main floor was reconfigured by removing a large, imposing fireplace chimney that had divided the heart of the home. The result is a cohesive, light-filled living, dining, and kitchen space that feels both expansive and welcoming. The dining area was finished with a custom built-in banquette, while a thoughtfully designed built-in coat closet at the entry brings everyday function to the home's first impression.

In the kitchen, clean lines and careful detailing create an uninterrupted connection between spaces. A flush-mount ceiling hood vent preserves the open sightlines, while a solid walnut live-edge bar adds warmth and contrast against the waterfall quartz island. White oak wide-plank floors and refined millwork carry a consistent, elevated rhythm throughout the home.

The primary ensuite became a true retreat, featuring an oversized soaking tub, built-in floating shelves, a custom vanity, and designer tile carried from the backsplash all the way to the ceiling. Two fully functional home offices—one on each level—were thoughtfully positioned to support focused, comfortable work from home. On the lower level, a media room, wine bar, and kitchenette create a versatile entertaining space designed with future flexibility in mind, ready to welcome multigenerational living when the time comes.

From the first design conversation to the final finishing details, this project reflects the trust, craftsmanship, and shared attention to detail that define every Rhodes Construction home—where thoughtful design meets the way our clients truly live.
